About Us

August Publications was formed in 2003 with the launch of Ballpark Digest. Since that time, our company has grown from a single employee working out of a home to a diversified publishing firm featuring Websites, books and other merchandise. We have established ourselves as a leading Internet publisher in the sports-business world, with tens of thousands of readers checking in weekly to our sites. We are headquartered in Minneapolis, MN.

Our motto is simple: We enjoy doing cool things and are overjoyed we can make a living doing so.

Our company’s offerings are broken along three lines:

+ SPORTS Our sports sites include Ballpark Digest, Arena Digest, Soccer Stadium Digest, Football Stadium Digest and Spring Training Online. Our first four books, The Complete Guide to Spring Training, The Complete Guide to Big League Ballparks, Homer: The Small-Town Baseball Odyssey, and Cradle of the Game: Baseball and Ballparks in North Carolina, are geared toward sports fans as well.

+ LIFESTYLES We’ve recently entered the outdoors market. Our first outdoors site is Yellowstone Insider, a complete guide to America’s first national park. Wanderkit is our next step in building up the Internet's best guides to the outdoors.

+ SUSTAINABILITY Our third and latest venture is devoted to sustainable living, which GreenSportsVenues.com falls under. We have combined our knowledge of the sports-business industry with important environmental concerns by launching a Web site devoted to sports venues going green and introducing sustainable technologies in new and renovated facilities nationwide. GreenSportsVenues.com chronicles sustainable living’s rise in the sports-venue world and brings up-to-date news crucial to sports-industry professionals, team owners, facility management firms, architects, designers, green vendors and consumers through regular features, news items, case studies and a ratings list compiled for all major facilities.

Our Staff

Publisher Kevin Reichard founded August Publications in 2003. (The company is named for his grandfather, August Reichard.) After graduating from Hamline University in 1983, Reichard was an editor at Minneapolis’s MSP Publications before embarking on a freelance career that ended up with a multiyear gig as executive editor at internet.com/Jupitermedia. He rode the Internet wave from bottom to top to bottom.

Creative Director Natalie Nowytski joined our team as Creative Director in January 2007 via craigslist, which proves that advertising really does work. Having been raised by artists, Natalie’s design chops were developed before she could even pronounce the phrase street cred. Peers have described her as a well-rounded and brand-smart creative who tackles even the most challenging projects with integrity and optimism. Colleagues and clients know her as “the one who is on-target.” Friends and relatives know her as “the one who gets to color all day.”

Her professional life has included an eight-year tenure with Fairview Health Services, in which she served in several marketing and communications capacities while launching Renaissance Jane—a creative agency she owns with her sister, Olenka. Before coming to August Publications, Natalie knew next to nothing about sports. As the creative lead, she is not only learning more about what a good batting average is, but she is also expanding the company brand across various media, including websites, books, advertising, apparel, podcasts and more. She is particularly excited about developing the look and feel of August’s new lifestyle-related websites and books, including those on Yellowstone National Park.

Marketing and Public Relations Director Erin Kangas comes from a broad background in Internet, sports and publishing. Before joining August Publications in 2008, Erin worked for Internet Broadcasting, cultivating her ability to generate advertising for online publications. A graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Erin began her career with a stint at ad agency Fallon and soon after landed an internship at the Minnesota Twins, where she deepened her passion for baseball and public affairs. A freelance designer and writer in her spare time, Erin recently designed a published children’s book and calendar. Erin is also a contributor for a popular local style newsletter that allows her to pursue her other passion – shopping.

Senior Editor Nelson King is a resident of Cooke City, Montana, where he spends his time following the ins and outs of Yellowstone National Park. Whether it’s explaining microbes in the geysers or the migratory patterns of bison in the Lamar Valley, King knows the ins and outs of the nation’s first national park.
