Earth Day is an auspicious time for sports teams to show off the strides they've made on the environmental front, especially when a promotion can be combined with the effort. Tomorrow night the Frederck Keys will show off the enviromental strides they've made at Harry Grove Stadium, which includes auto-flush valves on toilets and urinals, an LED scoreboard that burns less power than the old one, and new green lights.Goodwi

The Frederick (Md.) Keys (High Class A; Carolina League) will host their First Annual Going Green Night presented by Frederick County Department of Solid Waste Management and Bryant Heating and Cooling Systems on Friday, April 23 at 7 p.m. at Harry Grove Stadium. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a reusable tote bag that will be filled with information on recycling and waste management courtesy of the Frederick County Department of Solid Waste Management.

Goodwill of Frederick will be collecting clothing, furniture, and small appliances prior to the game to ensure the proper re-usage of these items.

The Frederick County Department of Solid Waste Management will also be available at the game to educate people about their new Single Stream Recycling Program. In addition, they will give away an Earth Machine which is used for compost purposes.

The Keys have also made renovations throughout Harry Grove Stadium to move toward the going green movement. Prior to last season, auto-flush valves were installed on all the toilets and urinals at Harry Grove Stadium. Also, auto-metered faucets were placed in all the restrooms as well. These adjustments cut water usage at Harry Grove Stadium by 20 percent.

Three years ago, “Light Structures Green” from Musco Lighting was installed at Harry Grove Stadium. This lighting structure cut the off-site light spillage by 50percent by having reflectors direct 90 percent of the light towards the field.

Last season, the Frederick Keys installed a new scoreboard, video board, and ribbon board that all use LED technology. LED technology reduces the amount of electricity when the product is in use.

“The Frederick Keys would like to embrace the green movement as we continue to move forward through improvements and renovations,” Frederick Keys Assistant General Manager Branden McGee said. “We have implemented green technologies and green incentives to help reduce, reuse, and recycle at Harry Grove Stadium.”

In addition to the renovations, the Keys plan on adding commingled container recycling to Harry Grove Stadium. This will allow people in attendance to recycle glass, aluminum, and plastic in one container. Harry Grove Stadium already offers paper and cardboard recycling. Last year, the Frederick Keys recycled over 700 yards of cardboard.
